Twaan's 2011 Wrap Up

This year has been an exciting one for us here at Kids Wasting Time. An incredible year for hip hop music paired with our big break into the blogosphere has made it an amazing time to be onboard at KWT. The genre's biggest stars dropped albums (Kanye, Jay) while rookies solidified their status among moguls (J. Cole, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar) and names shot up out of nowhere, proving to be the next big thing in the industry (Tyler, The Creator, Mac Miller). To make a long story short, whether you're rap's richest man or an indie artist pushing yourself, 2011 was a great year to be a rapper.
As always, when the year passes and moves on to a new one, we are left to reflect on what the past 365 days have given us, and, being obsessed with hip hop, guess what I reflected upon? We know every blog does this, but why should we be the lone site to be left outta the fun? Hit the jump to see my, Mark Twaan's (not LT's or TS's), Top 10 Projects and Songs of 2011, in no particular order, and in no way, shape, or form taking your opinion into any consideration.

The 2 Of Diamonds - "Slow" (prod. The Trakk Addicts)

The 2 Of Diamonds bring their 30 day onslaught to a close with "Slow," produced by the duo's go-to production team The Trakk Addicts. I must admit, Myke and Dee's #30for30 series was an awesome way to cap off a great year for hip hop music. I mean, come on, 30 straight days of dropping a new track? Can't get much better than that. I'm excited for the future of this rising Chicago twosome.

Sey - "Good Life" (prod. Razi Bear!)

"Chicago MC Sey and UK producer Razi Bear! link once more to make some more dope music for mass consumption. The two have a project in the works titled Scenes Of Our Dreams which will be released soon and Good Life is the first single off the mixtape. The joint features Razi's signature heavy on kick drums beat-style with a smooth voice sampled in the background, while Sey completely rips the instrumental in two with his awesome flow and authentic rhymes. The project will be presented by Chi-Town's Finest and it's currently in the final stages of mastering, so the 'tape will drop sooner than later." -via Chicago Now

Jimmy Astro - "Othello" (prod. Reese Jones)

After matching up perfectly for tracks on Jimmy and the entire Reese & Jimmy's Dope Adventure, KWT favorite rapper Jimmy Astro and producer Reese Jones collaborate yet again to bring us "Othello." Though this one's not set to appear on any, Astro is currently working on multiple projects, one of which is to be released shortly. Jimmy continues to impress, and, laced over a smooth Reese Jones backdrop, "Othello" might be some of his best work yet.

30 Songs You Shouldn't Leave 2011 Without

2011 is coming to a close, and with it, the annual round-up lists are pouring in. You know Kids Wasting Time isn't gonna sit this shit out. And so, your boy TS presents "30 Songs You Shouldn't Leave 2011 Without", a list of songs that were integral to hip-hop this year, got heavy burn, and strike me as necessary listens that define 2011. Or something. It's NOT a list of the best songs of 2011, and I tried to avoid songs done by the same principal artist. If you don't fuck with my list, head to the comments. Hit the jump and check it out.

Milk N Cookies - "Streebo" (Original Mix)

Whattup Kids, hope you're all having a Happy Holiday, whatever that may be. And the good music don't stop. As promised, Milk N Cooks drops off their latest track, "Streebo," an original mix. Recently, the twin DJs/producers have been grinding hard in the studio and performing live at clubs and venues across the midwest. If you like what you hear below and are still free this New Year's, head over to the Nikki or the MID nightclub in Chicago to catch them live.

Big Sean - Weekend Recap #24

Wiz, Cudder, CBreezy, and more... Happy holidays.

Hassani Kwess - "Kick The Bass, Chuck" (prod. Chuck Inglish)

KWT was first exposed to Hassani through a guest spot on Asher Roth's Pabst & Jazz mixtape, and now, only a few days after the project's release, the DC rapper makes his blog debut. Catching some definite buzz, Kwess linked up with Chuck Inglish for the first single from dude's forthcoming project Ruthless. We love what this highly slept on MC is doing, so be ready to get familiar.

Fashawn - "Generation F" (Video)

Here is one of the smoothest tracks I've heard Fashawn do. This is the Fashawn that I like. Not that hard, rugged and drugged Fashawn. Champagne and Styrofoam Cups coming in March.

Pac Div's The Div Hard Copies Now Available

Though it remains one of my favorite projects of 2011, until today, Pac Div's debut LP The Div has only existed in digital form. After a few push backs and delays, today the California trio and their newly founded The Div Co. finally released hard copies of the November project. The Div is available at select Best Buys as well as other retailers or for online purchase here.

Young Lyxx x The 2 Of Diamonds - "Hella Steez" (Remix)

Big Sean - "Keep It Gee" (feat. 2 Chainz)

Although I'm not much a fan of this type of B-I we had to cover it. This is the CDQ version while there was a earlier version which dropped this weekend. Keep it G.

Asher Roth - "Common Knowledge" (Video)

With the latest from Asher being release yesterday, the College Party Enthusiast gives one of the stand out tracks "Common Knowledge" the visual treatment. With Pabst & Jazz being as dope as it is, I'm sure we will be seeing a lot more videos other than this one and "In The Kitchen".

J.Nolan - "Time Machine"

The quickly rising ATLien MC J.Nolan brings us a new track in celebration and thanks to his listeners and fans over the past year. Although this won't appear on project, Nolan will be releasing his newest piece of work, The Archetype, on January 16th. Until then, rock with "Time Machine" and check back January 3rd when the EP's first single hits the web.

Game - "Martians Vs. Goblins" (feat. Tyler, The Creator & Lil Wayne) [Video]

This just dropped, I do believe. This song was bumping hard about a week ago, but it's been getting dangerously close to overplayed levels. We'll see what the video does for it's longevity.

What do you fuckers think?

Common - "Ghetto Dreams" (Alternate Version)

The original can do no wrong in my books, but the internets doesn't care. Nas doesn't spit the third verse, giving Lonnie plenty of time to run anchor. I'm gonna go back to watching Kings on Netflix, not listening to Lil Twist's new mixtape and continuing to not really thing about this Common/Drake beef. If that type of shit is your thing however, I've included the radio interview where Common admitted "Sweet" was directed at Drake after the jump.

The 2 Of Diamonds - "Train" (feat. Naledge)

TiRon & Ayomari - "All My Love" (feat. Yummy Bingham) [Video]

Probably my favorite track from one of my favorite projects of the year is visualized. These two currently make one of the best teams in hip hop, so we're hoping for more from Ronnie and Ayomari soon.

Asher Roth - Pabst & Jazz (Mixtape)

What we've heard so far from Asher's Blended Babies produced project Pabst & Jazz makes it a must download for us, and surely many of you. I was expecting to have to shell out a few bucks for this, and although I would've gladly abided, it being free is a nice surprise. Preview the title track below and grab that free download while you're at it.

Common - The Dreamer, The Believer (Album)

We don't leak albums, we promote them. Case in point, Common's ninth studio album The Dreamer, The Believer, which can be purchased, never downloaded, below. Produced entirely by No I.D., this is definitely one of my most anticipated albums of the year and will most likely end up on my top ten projects of 2011. Now, let's indulge...

KWT Wants You(r Opinion)!

Although we love each and every artist we post on KWT, there's always room for more, which is exactly where we have found ourselves. We're currently browsing the web for more artists to add to our post-worthy roster, and now we're asking for your help. Which artists are we sleeping on that we shouldn't be? Who should be regularly covered on KWT that we currently aren't posting? We want you, our viewers, to let us know which artists you think are worthy of a recurring spot on the KWT blog. Either hit us with your opinions below in the c-section, or tweet it to @KidsWastingTime along with the hashtag #KWTworthy. Don't be bashful!

Rockie Fresh - "Prom King"

Rockie's next endeavor is Driving 88, a mixtape that's due out January 23rd. The young Chicagoan recently let loose of the project's first single in "Prom Queen," which finds the dude preaching the benefits of a good education. Seeing as The Otherside is a classic for us, and how hard this joint goes, it looks like we're in for another tough tape from Sir Fresh.

Wiz Khalifa - "California" (Video)

Although LT still messes with Wiz heavily, I haven't been feeling his music as of late. So, out of appreciation to my homie and hope that Young Khalifa will start making How Fly quality music again (he's always been more of a mixtape artist for me), here goes dude's latest track "California." An unheard joint, Amber's Boy opts to release the single from his upcoming Taylor Allerdice mixtape in video form rather than audio alone.

12.15.2011

K.i.D - "We Can" (Video)

18 year old California emcee K.i.D, the newest artist to come to KWT's attention, recently released his album Super Duper along with a few music videos. Although the visual below is from a few months back, it's definitely our favorite track from the K.i.D. If you like what you hear, purchase the project below and continue to check up on KWT for updates from this dope, young left coast representer.

Bonus: K.i.D - FxL (Album)

Emilio Rojas - "Blame Me" (feat. Nikkiya)

A sure shot to land on Twaan's 2012 Freshmen List, the slept-on Emilio Rojas took to Twitter earlier today to release a brand new single from his forthcoming Breaking Point. With Nikkiya on the hook, this smooth track is a definite banger for me.

Asher Roth - "Choices" (feat. Action Bronson) [prod. Blended Babies]

Asher unleashes another Blended Babies produced joint from his upcoming Pabst & Jazz project, which is due out December 20th. This time around he grabs Action Bronson for a featured verse, who gives the song his traditional treatment. Asher continues to impress me with solid track after solid track. This EP is slowly yet surely turning into a very highly anticipated one for KWT.

The Boy Illinois On Sway In The Morning (Video)

The Boy Illinois puts it down over a beat from Grammy award winning producer Bangladesh. A little late on this video, as it's like 10 days old. But this needs more exposure.

B.o.B Speaks on NBC Nitecap (Interview)

The homie B.o.B goes on that show that's not really a show and talks life. Also, if you haven't picked up EPIC yet, you're slipping.

Kj Hamilton - "Get Up, Get Out" (Free-Verse)

Before Kj even went in this song was already winning with KWT, as you can't beat this classic OutKast backdrop. Normally we'd say this one was untouchable, but after a few listens there's no denying that the dude did his thing. Aspiring MC, Vol. 2 is on its way.

XV - "27 Club" (prod. The Awesome Sound)

Milk N Cookies - "Streebo" (Teaser Video)

Following their impressive "Someone Like You" bootleg, Milk N Cookies have been grinding hard in the studio, prepping tracks, and performing at clubs across the nation. Hitting the web on Christmas day will be the Chicago duo's "Streebo," of which a snippet can be heard in the video below. The track should be a dope Christmas present, and, if you're still free on NYE, head over to Nikki Nightclub and The MID in Chicago to catch the twin DJs/producers live.

Brandon Jennings – "Under the Armour" (Episode 7) [Video]

Why I'm just finding this, the final video is beyond me. I've got some catching up to do. Young Money.  Find the rest of the episodes here.

Common - "Raw (How You Like It)" [prod. No I.D.]

Com unleashes another The Dreamer, The Believer track exactly one week before his ninth studio album hits shelves. Being a huge Common fan, I'm more excited than ever to purchase this one. With joints like "Sweet," "Ghetto Dreams," and "Blue Sky," how could any hip hop lover not be? As always with this project, No I.D. on the track, so let the story begin.

Pre-Order: The Dreamer, The Believer (Album)

Asher Roth - "Pabst & Jazz" (feat. Hassani Kwess & Kenny Keys) [prod. Blended Babies]

With the project's first offering already aboard the internets, Asher gives us round two from his upcoming mixtape, Pabst & Jazz Sessions, due out December 20th. Following in the footsteps of "Common Knowledge," (and the entire project, for that matter) the title track was produced by Chicago production duo Blended Babies. This one also features a verse from DC native Hassani Kwess as well as Kenny Keys spicing up the jazzy production with some dope piano work. My affinity for Asher Roth continues to grow rapidly, as it was at rock bottom with "I Love College" and his debut album. Ever since then, his music has been on the up for me, and this is a perfect example.

CO$$ - "Angels Sing" (feat. J.Nolan & Thurz)

On the eve of his Instrument of Emotion EP release, LA rapper CO$$ drops the project's first single, "Angels Sing." Featuring KWT up and coming favorite J.Nolan as well as former U-N-I member Thurz, this joint was produced by Abnormal. We like what we hear from all, so expect more CO$$, J.Nolan, and Thurz featured on KWT in the near future.

Pac Div - "Top Down" (feat. Skeme & Casey Veggies)

Pac Div, Skeme, and Young Veggies... Shut up. Listen. Watch. Buy.

Will Effe - "Peter Pan (DMCB)"

The latest MC to take a spin on Drake's "Dreams Money Can Buy" is Will Effe, an artist that's still new to us at KWT. But with another single dropping some time this week and a full project hitting the web before the new year, we'll be getting to know the dude pretty well in the coming days.

Rahiem Supreme - "Tonight" (feat. Fennan)

An artist who's fairly new to KWT, but sure to be around for the long haul, is Rahiem Supreme. Fresh off the release of his mixtape Genesis, Supreme gives us the first taste of his new, post-tape music. Seeing as a video is in the making for "Tonight," rather than a picture below, I have posted a preview of the forthcoming visual.

Lupe Fiasco - "American Terrorist III"

Looking back on Lupe's past discography, a personal favorite of mine was his Food & Liquor standout "American Terrorist." Therefore, when Wasalu hit Twitter with "American Terrorist III" on Saturday, I was pretty hyped. Expecting a track with the same sort of vibe as the original, I pushed play and was completely wrong. Although the political theme is still there, "III" has a totally differing sound than the Matthew Santos featured joint. Produced by a member of Daft Punk, listen on as Lupe Fiasco does his thing over Kavinsky's "Nightfall." Although still beyond talented, Lupe seems to be getting stranger and stranger with every release...let me know if you agree in the comments section.

Curren$y - "First Place" (feat. Trademark Da Skydiver, Young Roddy & Sir Michael Rocks) [Video]

For the first visual offering from JETS International's compilation album, Spitta chooses "First Place," which features an appearance and verse by each of the members of the JETS team. I'm really diggin' the way Mikey fits in with this group. Nice choice, boss.

50 Cent - The Big 10 (Mixtape)

50's huge year continues with the release of his latest project. If hip hop was the NFL Curtis would be unanimously voted comeback player of the year. Tracklist and download after the jump.

The Freedom Fighters Cypher (Video)

The Freedom Fighters fam came together to capture the hip hop camp's cypher, featuring Steve Cantrell, Baby Juice, Monte Carlo, Tony B., and the FF producer David Luke. Dude lays down a real smooth backdrop, leaving the rest of the crew to do their thing over the top. You can't go wrong with these dudes, and stay tuned for perhaps some exclusive content from KWT x FF. #FISTHIGH.

12.08.2011

Sir Michael Rocks - "Just For You" (Remix) [prod. Tye Hill]

Mikey's The Rocks Report track receives a facelift from the frequent Sir Michael collaborator Tye Hill, who flips "Just For You" into a joint that's just about as smooth as it can get.

The 2 Of Diamonds - "The 9th Element" (Freestyle)

Myke Boogie, one half of 2OD, kicks some solo bars over a classic 9th Wonder beat to kick off week 2 of the Chicago hip hop group's 30 for 30 series. If you can't do the math, "The 9th Element' is day 8's track. Expect a mixtape compiling all 30 tracks to drop some time around New Years.

IFC's Watch The Throne (Movie Trailer)

Although it seems overly corny and plagued with terrible acting, this is actually a scene from an upcoming IFC film entitled, you guessed it, Watch The Throne. Inspired by Jay and Ye's number one album, the Patrick Willems directed flick will be officially released soon through IFC. I gotta admit, it does make me laugh a little, and kinda reminds me of Ludacris's "Greatest Hits (Skit)" from Word of Mouf. Look it up.

12.07.2011

Slick Rick - "Need Some Bad" (prod. DJ Premier)

New Slick Rick? Why thank you. The Ruler does his thing over some DJ Premier production for Jonah Hill's new movie The Sitter. Sounds as good as ever.

Big Sean - Weekend Recap #23 (Video)

Big Sean kicking it with Wale and others. And when they are talking about his height... dude really does look super short in real life.

BillNi - "Fathem" (Instrumental)

The hometown homie and DJ/producer in the making BillNi comes through with his first production, so you know we had to back the dude up. The 21 year old Illinois native pairs his hallmark dubstep sound with hip hop roots, making "Fathem" a definite banger for all y'all that like a little womp in your life. As you can see, BillNi definitely does, and, evidenced by the track, he's also got quite a talent for producing. We're thinking this is the launch of a promising musical stint for The Science Guy.

12.06.2011

Trizz - "Kings" (feat. Jack Mushroom)

This single from Trizz & Jack Mushroom will appear on Trizz's upcoming album Case 17 set to release January 5th on iTunes for $5.99.  Trizz is no new face here on KWT and neither is Jack Mushroom. Many of you know Jack as one of the many Wolfs of Odd Future. Hit the link to learn more.

Fashawn - "Skating Down The Block" (Video)

Now I can't talk for TS, but Twaan and I have been known to hit the streets with the boards... Unlike Fashawn we never slung any drugs. This supposed ode to skateboarding (more like ode to skater drug dealers) will probably end up Fashawn's Champagne and Styrofoam Cups which is coming soon.

Blu - "The Clean Hand" (prod. Pete Rock)

Blu lets this gem loose via tweeter. More coming from Pete and Blu?! We can only hope so cause this one  is clean.

The Boy Illinois - "A Minute To The Top" (Freestyle)

On his way up to DrJays.com's top floor office in NYC, Illi drops a freestyle for BossLady.tv x Convention Magazine's "A Minute To The Top" series. I wish all elevator music sounded like this.

The 2 Of Diamonds - "Just Another"

I'll let the source explain this one...
"The 2 of Diamonds release the 6th track of their 30 day series entitled “Just Another.”  The cynical track, produced by Vans Beats, is an ode to the stereotypical images of rappers that many have that The 2 of Diamonds don’t fit into."
When the 30 days is up, expect a mixtape from the Chicago duo compiling all 30 tracks from their 30 for 30 series.

Soul Khan - Pursuance (EP)

Here we go. We're making the final rounds in our ranking of The 10 Best OFWGKTA Moments with our final post, which counts down the top three most defining, important events in OF history. Although numbers three through one are surely quite predictable and interchangeable, there's no denying that these happenings multiplied OF's popularity while shooting them into mainstream hip hop culture.

Before you get started on the final three, freshen up your memory with a glance at Part 1 and Part 2. Once updated, hit the jump to read the list's intro as well as KWT's 3 Best OFWGKTA Moments.

B.o.B - "Strange Clouds" (feat. Lil Wayne) [Video]

The first single off of B.o.B's upcoming Strange Clouds, which also became a track off his recent mixtape Epic now exists in video form. On first glance, it's a lot of poorly acted scenes of people being amazed by the sky, interspersed with Bobby Ray, Wayne and T.I. standing in a field. What do you think?

Kj Hamilton - Aspiring MC, Vol. II (Preview Video)

Within the next month, 20 year old Georgia rapper Kj Hamilton will drop his next project Aspiring MC, Vol. II. Hamilton and the fine folks over at Team Aspiring MC shot a preview for the EP, which can be seen below. Aside from a snippet of a very soulful beat, it looks like Kj doesn't wanna give too much away for his forthcoming project. Stay in touch for updates until the EP drops, which is coming soon.

The 2 Of Diamonds - "Sasha Thumper" (Freestyle)

Day 4 of the Chi-Town twosome's 30 for 30 series finds The 2 Of Diamonds' own Dee Rush going in over the classic OutKast instrumental.

Common - "The Believer" (feat. John Legend)

Every track these two have ever hopped on together has ended up being a classic in this dude's mind, so I was personally super hyped for this specific joint from Common's upcoming album The Dreamer, The Believer. Due out on December 20th, the album will be Com's ninth LP, and from the joints he's released early, he's definitely still got it. But when was that ever in question?

Pac Div - "Moment" (ft. J-Doe & Lonny Bureal) [prod. Swiff D]

The trio of left coast natives unleash an unreleased joint produced by, of course, Swiff D. Featuring both J-Doe and Lonny Bureal, I feel like this one could've ended up on the group's recently released debut album, The Div. Who knows. Either way, Pac Div's got Sealed For Freshness 2 in the making, which is coming soon.
